Double Red Cockatoo Dwarf Cichlid

Apistogramma cacatuoides

pH 6.6 · 26°C · Soft water 2 dGH

Female entered coconut cave. 60–80 eggs counted on cave ceiling.

Eggs hatched. Female fanning wrigglers. Male patrolling perimeter. First aggression toward otocinclus.

47 fry counted free swimming. Female herding tightly. Moved to 40L grow-out.

Color developing. Males showing orange dorsal fin extensions. 38 survivors to juvenile stage.

Third successful spawn this year. The female is an absolute tyrant — she evicted the male from his own territory on day 4.

Crystal Red Shrimp (S-Grade)

Caridina cantonensis

pH 6.2 · 22°C · TDS 130 · RO water

Found first berried female. Eggs visible under saddle. Moved to dedicated breeding tank.

Eggs darkening. Can see eye spots with macro lens. Female fanning constantly.

12 shrimplets released. Tiny white and red. Living in java moss for first weeks.

CRS are unforgiving. One TDS spike and they abort the eggs. I check parameters twice daily during berry. The S-grade coloration on these shrimplets is stunning.

Ammonia spike 4 ppm — fish gasping at surface — HELP

Tested water 20 mins ago. Ammonia 4 ppm, nitrite 0.5. Fish are at the surface. Just did 50% WC. What else can I do right now? I have Prime.

Priya N.

SK
Siosaia K.Planted Expert2:19 AM

Dose Prime immediately — it detoxifies ammonia for 24-48 hours even though it won't reduce the reading. Dose for the full tank volume, not just the water changed.

MT
Marcus T.Moderator2:22 AM

Also check your pH. Ammonia toxicity is exponentially worse above pH 7.5. If you're below 7.0 you have more time. What's your pH?

PN
Priya N.OP2:24 AM

pH is 6.9. Dosed Prime. Fish seem slightly better already. Doing another 30% WC now.

MT
Marcus T.Moderator2:31 AMSolution

Good — pH 6.9 helps. Keep dosing Prime daily for 3 days. Your cycle probably crashed. Add Seachem Stability or Fritz Turbo Start tomorrow. You're going to be fine.

QUESTION20L betta2:08 AM

Betta flaring at mystery snail for 3 hours straight — normal?

It's 2am and I can't sleep watching this. My betta has been full-flare at my mystery snail for literally 3 hours. The snail is just vibing. Is this stressing him out?

Juno R.

Ha! Classic betta behavior. He sees the snail's "antennae" and antenna movement and interprets it as a rival. It's annoying but harmless for the betta — they have the attention span of... well, a fish.

FA
Fatima A.Betta Keeper2:18 AMSolution

The snail is 100% unbothered. Mystery snails have a protective operculum and can just seal up and ignore the drama. Your betta will get bored in a day or two.

Okay I love this community. Going to sleep now. Thank you both 😭

CO2 diffuser not making bubbles — whole scape is melting

Woke up and plants look pale and stem plants are going limp. CO2 bubble counter shows nothing. Checked the tank — diffuser has white calcium buildup. Is this fixable tonight or do I need new gear?

Tomasz W.

SK
Siosaia K.Planted Expert11:51 PM

Soak the diffuser in diluted white vinegar (50/50 with water) for 30-60 minutes. Calcium deposits dissolve completely. Rinse thoroughly before reinstalling.

Also check your check valve — they fail silently and can back-siphon water into your CO2 regulator. If the diffuser fixes it, great. If not, the regulator solenoid may need cleaning.

Vinegar soak worked perfectly. Bubble rate back to 2bps. Plants should recover in 48 hours. You guys saved my 4-year-old Dutch scape.
